The short answer
In Japan, a 60-minute session with a personal trainer who comes to you typically costs around ¥8,000–¥15,000. Studio-based personal gyms often sell 2-month programs of around ¥200,000, paid upfront. On top of the session fee, check whether travel, venue fees and an enrollment fee are included — the total matters more than the headline price.
At FIT STAGE, a trial session is ¥6,600 and a regular 60-minute session is ¥9,900. Tax and travel within Osaka, Hyogo and Kyoto are included, there is no enrollment fee, and everything is in English.
Two kinds of personal training in Japan
| Studio-based personal gym | Trainer comes to you | |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Often a 2–3 month program paid upfront | Often per session, packs or monthly |
| Typical cost | Around ¥200,000 for 2 months | Around ¥8,000–¥15,000 per 60 min |
| Where you train | At the gym | Home, apartment gym, hotel, office or a rental gym |
| Commute | You travel to the gym | None — the trainer travels |
| Equipment | Full gym equipment | Depends on the place you choose |
What you actually pay for
| Item | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Session fee | The coaching itself, usually 60 minutes | Length, and 1 vs 2 people |
| Travel fee | The trainer's travel to you | Included or extra? Extra charge outside the area? |
| Venue fee | Rental gym or studio hourly fee | Who pays it, and roughly how much |
| Enrollment fee | One-time sign-up cost | Is there one, and how much? |
| Packs & monthly plans | Discounts for paying ahead | Expiry date and cancellation rules |
What expats should check before signing up
- The language of the contract: many gyms only offer sign-up forms, contracts and rules in Japanese. Make sure you understand what you're agreeing to.
- How much you pay upfront: if you might move or travel, a large upfront program is a risk. Pay-as-you-go is safer.
- Cancellation rules: ask when you can cancel for free and what happens to unused sessions.
- Tattoo rules: some gyms in Japan still restrict tattoos. Training at home or in your hotel avoids the issue.
- Where you'll actually train: a cheaper gym across town can cost you more in time than a trainer who comes to you.

How to keep the cost down
- Choose a service that includes travel: a low session price can end up expensive once travel is added.
- Use packs or a monthly plan: if you plan to keep going, paying ahead lowers the price per session.
- Train with a partner: a 2-person session splits the cost.
- Start with a trial: don't commit to a big program before you know the trainer is a good fit.
